TAGA TECHNICAL WHITEPAPER: ISO Printing

Prepared by Jinkai Qian

ISO Printing TAGA Technical Whitepaper.

Abstract: ISO Printing

Annex A of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 13655 defines specimen backing requirements used for the measurement of color in the graphic arts industry. Due to the varying aspects of print processes, different vendors and print manufacturers use a range of backing substrates for color calibration or measurement. This study aims to evaluate commonly available backing materials based on ISO printing requirements. It includes officially recognized ISO-compliant substrates as well as alternative materials originally designed for other uses that could potentially meet ISO printing standards. The results identify some cost-efficient surface materials that are practical for both packaging suppliers and the broader graphic arts industry. This study helps printers and manufacturers make informed decisions regarding backing selection while maintaining compliance with ISO standards.

What does ISO stand for?

ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization. It is an independent, non-governmental international body that develops and publishes global standards to ensure quality, safety, efficiency, and consistency across various industries, including printing.

What is ISO Printing?

ISO printing refers to print production processes that follow standardized guidelines established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These standards ensure consistency, repeatability, and quality across global print operations. For more information about color relevant ISO standards, visit our webpage. In particular, ISO 12647 outlines color control standards for different printing technologies, helping printers achieve predictable, high-quality results.

What is ISO Certification for Printing?

ISO certification for printing verifies that a print company follows ISO-defined procedures for production, quality control, and color management. Being ISO certified often means the company is committed to best practices in workflow, color consistency, ink density, substrate handling, and environmental management.

What is an ISO Print?

An ISO print refers to a printed piece produced using ISO-certified workflows and specifications. These prints meet color accuracy standards, adhere to specific process tolerances, and are typically used in professional, high-quality printing environments where consistency is critical.

Understanding and implementing ISO printing practices ensures your output meets global quality expectations—essential for competitive print businesses today.
